Unfortunately, your toothbrush can quickly wear down if you don’t take good care of it. This is unfortunate because if you have a worn, dirty, or ineffective toothbrush, your smile won’t be properly cleaned each day. So, to help you keep your toothbrush in tip-top shape, our Loftus Family Dental dental team encourages you to do the following things:
Oftentimes, your hands have countless germs that just wait to move onto the next object you touch. This is why it’s important to wash your hands before you brush your teeth. If you wash your hands, those germs won’t transfer over to your toothbrush.
It’s best to keep your toothbrush away from the other toothbrushes in the bathroom. At least do your best to keep the bristles from touching. If you give your brush the space it needs, there is a chance you will avoid the germs from the other brushes.
Make sure your toothbrush bristles are dry before you use the brush again. Also, if you have a toothbrush cover, make sure the bristles are dry before you put it on. This is because the moist environment can promote bacteria growth.
Keep your toothbrush to yourself. Please don’t share it with other people—not even your family members. Sharing a toothbrush can easily transfer germs from one person to the other and it can even promote tooth decay.
Now, even though these tips can help you keep your toothbrush in tip-top shape, you will still need to replace it every 3-4 months or when the toothbrush bristles have been frayed. It’s also important to throw your toothbrush out after you have been sick.
